Corporate Backgrounder
Birth of Kallback
International Telcom Ltd. is a privately-held company of more than 200
employees in Seattle, Washington USA. Founded in 1981 as Telecom Design, ITL
operates as an international telecommunications and data-transmission service
provider for clients across a broad spectrum of business and personal
applications. The company is best known for introducing Kallback, the original
worldwide call re-origination service that provides customers around the world
with low-cost international telephone lines.
Disturbed that telephone charges in his London hotel room added up to more
than the room itself, ITL founder and CEO Joel Eisenberg realized that a myriad
of business travelers like himself must be frustrated by exorbitant
international telephone rates. In response, the wily Mr. Eisenberg and his team
of software developers engineered the necessary programs to allow a computer to
re-originate foreign calls from the U.S. Thus, Kallback and an entire industry
were born.
To access Kallback's computer switching system, clients call a number and
hang up after the first ring. The computer immediately returns the call, and
after pressing the pound key, users receive a dial tone and can place as many
calls as necessary. Utilizing the fiber-optic networks of AT&T and other
international carriers and the latest digital telephone switches, Kallback
provides connections of superior quality at a discount of 50% or more. Since its
inception, Kallback has grown at a rate of over 10% per month and projects a
gross revenue of US$100 million this year. Kallback has since spawned an entire
call re-origination industry that could surpass $1 billion in gross revenue in
1997.
Faxaway is the largest Internet-based service of its kind. An email-to-fax
gateway enabling users to send an email to any fax machine in the world, Faxaway
leverages the company's network of international carriers to provide fax service
at the lowest possible rates. A fax to the U.S. from anywhere in the world costs
as little as ten cents (US$0.10). Faxaway capabilities include email-to-fax,
broadcast faxing, fax-back service, comprehensive graphics and document
attachment support, as well as custom formatting.
ITL introduced iWATS during the summer of 1995 as a way to offer Kallback's
discounted international rate structure to the domestic U.S. market. iWATS is
currently available in the Seattle area via 1 Plus access and is available
nationwide via 800 Dial-Through access. iWATS may be utilized by clients for all
their long-distance needs, including both international and interstate
long-distance calls.
ITL also offers telephone debit cards and calling center services (Kall
Kiosk). The company's services include Internet services, and various customized solutions for
corporate customers. As the company expands its customer base, growth strategies
may include the acquisition of smaller "callback" firms, and the
strategic placement of telephone switches throughout the world to enable the
company to compete more efficiently in regional markets.
ITL continues to attract media attention around the world, receiving praise
from media as diverse as RTHK in Hong Kong, CBS News, KTLA-TV in Los Angeles,
National Public Radio, The New York Times, The International Herald
Tribune in Paris, The Financial Times and The Economist in
London, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and US News &
World Report. ITL is heralded by the international media for the clarity
and reliability of its international telephone service and 24-hour customer
service it provides.
